New Harry Winston Project Z14 Retrograde Seconds
QuickTakes: New Harry Winston Project Z14 Retrograde Seconds
The limited edition Harry Winston Project Z14 is the brand's answer to modern timepieces. It uses an unconventional alloy, Zalium, hence the name Z; a sporty design with a rubber/fabric strap; it is skeletonized.

Like previous models in the Project Z series, the Harry Winston Project Z14 uses a case made of Zalium. Zalium, a proprietary aluminum and zirconium alloy, is a peculiar alloy proprietary to Harry Winston that is similar to titanium in lightness and strength, but with greater hardness and scratch resistance.
Like previous iterations of the Z Project, the case maintains the thick bezel and lug design, with a prominent crown guard assembly.
The Harry Winston Project Z14's watch face focuses on making the watch face more 3D than ever. The openwork concept features modular layered panels and bridges in a mix of polished and black finishes. The bronze base contrasts with the brand's signature blue hour markers and hour and minute hands.
The three-dimensional main chronograph subdial at 12 o’clock completes the symmetrical dial layout with a blue minute track and a Harry Winston emerald-cut logo.
The brand’s blue again serves as the base for the retrograde seconds hand, as well as the blue screws on the two bridges that secure the main subdial.

The colour contrast helps to focus on the watch's main complication, the retrograde seconds hand. Vibrant red hints at a racing speedometer, while the rear jump is reminiscent of a tachometer when shifting gears.

Harry Winston powers the Z14 with the HW2202 automatic retrograde seconds movement. The in-house movement features a skeletonized oscillating weight in 18K white gold and is anti-magnetic through a silicon hairspring.
It beats at 28,800 vph and has a 65-hour power reserve. In terms of finishing, the movement features radial Côtes de Genève on the main plate and polished beveled edges throughout.
Overall, the Harry Winston Z14 excels in design and sophistication. Its approach shows it understands modern affluent buyers, as well as current trends in sports luxury timepieces. The skeletonized design is well executed, and the retrograde display subtly shows what the snail cam is animating on the dial side.
