Watch Review: Porsche Design Timepiece No.1 & Chronograph Titanium Limited Edition
Porsche Design doesn't just produce leather goods and sunglasses. This is not our material at Monochrome-Watches. The word "watch" comes up in our blog's title, and if we had to talk about Porsche Designs, it's because they are undoubtedly fun timepieces. Black themes and chronographs have always been part of Porsche's DNA. In keeping with that spirit, here are two new faithful versions, the Porsche Design Timepiece No.1 and the Chronograph Titanium Limited Edition.
A little history lesson
Without a doubt, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was one of the truly great designers of the 20th century. He conceived one of the most recognizable and legendary sports cars in the world; the Porsche 911. FA Porsche, also known as Butzi, graduated from the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) design school in Ulm, founded by Max Bill, a former student of the Bauhaus in Dessau. The Bauhaus movement in art focused on the aesthetics of everyday objects, reducing decoration to basic and pure geometric shapes. The Bauhaus curriculum returns to basic materials, supporting symmetry, subtlety and consistency. The beauty lies in the simplicity and practicality of the function, which seems to be the cornerstone philosophy underpinning Butzi's design philosophy. In 1972, Butzi left the company after a family dispute with Dr. Ferdinand Piech and founded Porsche Design Studio in Stuttgart. His first product was the watch, a chronograph with a quirky, unique look and all the design attributes he loved.

The Chronograph I was the first watch to challenge the traditional design of chronographs. It's a style-defining classic thanks to its looks: it's black, which has never been seen before. Porsche chose to use an industrial process called PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) to complete the case. Mainly used in military applications, PVD was originally designed to reduce friction and wear on metal components. PVD coatings in watches are generally used to improve hardness, wear resistance and oxidation resistance. The Chronograph I features a black coating on the case and bracelet, which brings anti-glare properties in addition to a discreet and unique look. The first encounter in the watch industry has undoubtedly created a trend that many people follow (eg Heuer). But it wasn't just the color of the watch that was groundbreaking. This is the entire watch itself. Butzi Porsche embraced the Bauhaus aesthetic and designed a functional watch that blends function equally with aesthetics. Without any decoration. A functional case enhances comfort, and the dial serves that purpose as well. The movement used is the Valjoux Cal.7750, a new and reliable chronograph movement.
At first, Butzi Porsche chose Orfina Watch Company to manufacture watches. They were very cool and very sought after in the 1970s. The Porsche name on the dial allowed the company to flourish, and in 1978 the Valjoux cal.7750 was changed to the Lemania cal.5100. More powerful movements designed for hard use opened up the market considerably, with military contracts most notably from the Bundeswehr and the Venezuelan Armed Forces. Special editions are also available (Tiger, NATO, Royal Navy), while other PVD colors are available (khaki green, royal blue, and even camouflage in some prototypes). The old Orfina Porsche Design and its variants will be reviewed in a future article in Monochrome.
The Orfina chapter ended in 1978 when Butzi decided to work with IWC. Butzi Porsche met his ideal sparring partner and his dedicated CEO Günter Blümlein at IWC (making iconic watches like the OCEAN 2000). 1998 ushered in a new era following the acquisition of the venerable Swiss brand Eterna by the Porsche family. However, in the last months of 2014, Porsche Design decided for the first time to continue producing timepieces entirely made by Porsche Design. These watches are the first to be developed entirely in-house and continue to be based on the same design principles of the legendary Chronograph I.

Nothing is just for decoration. The case, dial and overall design reflect this purism. These two automatic chronographs were developed entirely by Porsche Design Timepieces AG in Solothurn (Switzerland) and are also manufactured in Switzerland. Both watches feature a titanium case with a diameter of 42 mm. The black case of the No. 1 timepiece has been sandblasted and coated (PVD), making the matte black finish even more durable. In terms of technical characteristics, both watches are equipped with a mechanical Valjoux 7750 chronograph with a power reserve of 48 hours. The black sapphire crystal caseback showcases the inner workings of the unique, energy-optimized Porsche Design rotors.
