Fernando Alonso's Richard Mille watch is inspired by the story of the 47 ronin

Richard Mille has launched a brand new samurai watch - and it's making our knees weak.

The RM 47 was inspired by a conversation between Richard Mille himself and two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso.

It has taken four years to create since that conversation.

The Spaniard is currently competing in F1's Alpine races, but he's also an avid fan of traditional Japanese art and samurai principles.

The Story of Nagano Asano and the 47 Ronin
The RM 47 is a tribute to the Asano family.

They originated in Hiroshima and have a legendary Japanese ancestor.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the daimyo or chief of the family domain, Asano Eidetsu, was the lord of the 47 ronin who avenged his death before following him into the afterlife.

The Asano family crest appears on the tourbillon at 6 o’clock.

Each samurai clan has its own family crest, and they carry the coat of arms on their clothes, sabers, and battle flags.

This emblem is also very finely etched on the winglet of the warrior's helmet, representing two crossed falcon feathers.

What should I know about the watch itself?
Timepieces like this are naturally limited editions.

The baseplate and bridges are made of grade 5 titanium. This is a biocompatible, highly corrosion resistant and very hard alloy. This will ensure smooth operation of the gear train.

The alloy is 90% titanium, 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium.

Like all Richard Mille watches, the RM 47 has undergone rigorous testing.

The skeletonized baseplates and bridges have undergone intensive and complete verification testing. Therefore, this optimizes the resistance capacity.

It takes a total of 16 hours of carving time to obtain the 11 components that make up the samurai. Simply stunning.
