Bell & Ross RS 19 Collection
Although best known for pilot watches, Bell & Ross has partnered with the Renault Sport Formula 1 team for the fourth year in a row to produce a range of motorsport-themed watches. At Baselworld 2019, Bell & Ross presented four chronographs in the RS19 collection: BR V3-94, BR 03-94, BR X1 and BR X1 Tourbillon Chronograph, all dressed in Renault yellow. and carbon fiber.
Starting at the most affordable end, the V3-94 RS19 model features a round steel case, similar to those in the Bell & Ross vintage/traditional collection, but enlarged to 43mm in diameter. The dial here is made of carbon fiber with bright shades of yellow, green and red, and has a sneaky date window at 4:30. Powering the V3-94 is the BR-CAL.301 movement, an automatic chronograph movement made of ETA 2894-2 with a 42-hour power reserve, 37 jewels, and beating at 28,800vph . Moving up the pricing food chain, the 03-94 shares much of the same DNA as the V3-94; however, it is presented in Bell & Ross' most recognizable case shape. The 03-94 also features a square steel case with a diameter of 42 mm, a two-way chronograph bezel, sapphire crystal, and 100-meter water resistance. It is powered by the same caliber BR-CAL.301 as the V3-94. The dial here is also very similar, sharing the same carbon fiber base and color accents (but with a more symmetrical date window at 6 o'clock). For the 03-94, your only strap option is a perforated black rubber strap. Overall, this is the rectangular cousin of the V3-94.
Carbon fiber is the name of the game for the first two models, while the BR-X1 is all about mechanics. The 45mm diameter BR-X1 is larger and has a titanium case with ceramic trim. The BR-CAL.313 automatic chronograph movement (also based on ETA 2894-2) drives the BR-X1. The movement has 56 jewels, a power reserve of 42 hours and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The skeletonized dial and tinted sapphire display caseback draw the focus to the mechanism. At the top, we have the BR-X1 Tourbillon Chronograph. As you might have guessed from its name, this model is the BR-X1, but with more tourbillons. This variant retains the BR-X1's 45mm titanium case and sapphire caseback, but is powered by the BR-CAL.283, a hand-wound mechanical flying tourbillon movement with a single-button guide post Wheel Chronograph. The movement boasts a 100-hour power reserve, thanks in part to its 21,600vph operating speed. As you'd expect from any tourbillon, you still get the skeletonized dial here, and the sub-dials have been moved up for a clear view of the visually-dominant tourbillon at 6 o'clock.
Bell & Ross certainly has a history of doing things its own way. The brand's signature rectangular case is large and unmistakable. The racing watch in partnership with the Renault Sport F1 team takes advantage of this iconic style, but dresses it up with the energy and dynamism of top motorsports.
