Richard Mille RM 35-03 Automatic Rafael Nadal: The Butterfly Effect
Inspired by the Richard Mille watch worn on the court by tennis star Rafael Nadal, the RM 35-03 Automatic Rafael Nadal is now available. It offers an entirely new feature with a butterfly rotor. The wearer can change the geometry of the rotor at the touch of a button to adapt the way the watch is wound to his lifestyle. A characteristic feature of Richard Mille movements has always been the variable geometry of the winding rotor. However, adjustments must be made by a certified watchmaker. Now the owner himself can suspend the winding spontaneously, for example during sports activities. The watch comes in two versions with different cases. However, the movement with the characteristic rotor remains the same.

The RM 35-03 comes in two different versions. On the one hand, with a white Quartz TPT case and a Carbon TPT midsection. Additionally, a version made of dark blue Quartz TPT with a white Quartz TPT midsection will be released. These materials are made by weaving and melting tiny carbon fibers or silica filaments, which give the surface a textured appearance. The hollowed-out case shape is inspired by the RM 27-04 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal that tennis stars actually wear on the court. Measuring 43.1 x 49.9 mm and 13.1 mm high, the RM 35-03 is dignified in size.
Both the front and back of the watch are protected by sapphire crystal, which also gives a look inside. On the right is a large crown with a rubber coating, which provides a good grip, but only guarantees water resistance to 50 meters. In addition, there is a pusher at 2 o’clock that can be used to toggle the function of the crown. The other putter is on the other side at the 7 o'clock position. It bears the words "Sport Mode" and triggers the function of the butterfly rotor.

The RM 35-03 uses skeletonized hands to indicate the time, with hour markers in luminous material on the ring. The numbers are tilted slightly towards the movement to create depth. Otherwise, a skeletonized movement is displayed on the front. Here, the stylized butterfly pattern refers to the special winding mechanism. In addition, the responsible column wheel of the function selector is clearly visible. A small hand at 2 o'clock indicates the currently selected crown function. If set to "W", the wearer can wind the watch. On the other hand, "N" stands for neutral, and the last position can be used to set the time.
The movement at 6 o'clock indicates the current mode of the winding rotor. When the red hand points "ON", the rotor opens and winds the barrel. In "OFF", the weight is extended and the rotor is in equilibrium. The barrel is not wound.

The movement of the Richard Mille RM 35-03 Automatic Rafael Nadal is made of sandblasted titanium with a grey plasma treatment. This gives it a flat surface, which is important for the function of the gear train. A free spring balance wheel sets the rhythm here. It operates at 4 Hz and can be adjusted by four small weights on the rim. The necessary energy comes from a double barrel, which stores 55 hours of maximum power autonomy. A patented butterfly rotor takes care of the winding.
This allows the wearer to stop the barrel from winding if necessary. This is useful because too much activity can negatively affect barrel performance. The rotor consists of two weights that are adjacent in the starting position. With the help of gravity, they generate the torque that winds the watch. However, when the button at 7 o'clock is pressed, a separate gear train pulls the two counterweights apart. This shifts the center of gravity to the middle, which also counteracts their wrapping force. The release of the feature also provides haptic feedback. Therefore, the wearer feels the extension of the weight.
