U-BOAT Chimera

U-Boat Capsoil Darkmoon - A home for the poor?

The U-Boat Capsoil series was officially launched in November 2018. They just released the second iteration of this concept called Darkmoon. This new collection has a more minimalist approach and a lower entry price, but looking at it, we can't help but think of other greasy timepieces - because in the high quality replica watches industry, there is nothing new under the sun and the moon (watch brands love the moon, I especially like the dark side of the moon for some reason).

Back in 2013, KeepTheTime launched the liquid-filled Ressence Type 3 at Baselworld. As it turns out, the "liquid" is...oil.

While both are futuristic and cool fuel-filled watches, they are not comparable from an engineering and design standpoint. The big difference between the Capsoil and the Type 3 (and Type 5) is that the Ressence is a mechanical watch, while the Darkmoon is powered by a $16.95 Swiss quartz movement.

The battery-powered movement is visible through the exhibition-style caseback. Although, the U-Boat seems to have heeded the criticism that it is a quartz watch, and newer models have a solid caseback and no running seconds hand (making it less obvious that it is a quartz replica bubba watson watches).

The movement is a 2-hand Ronda caliber 712 and the battery life is approximately 60 months. Capsoil/Darkmoon models have red text on the dial that reads: Operates between 0/+60 degrees Celsius. Interestingly, the Ronda tech sheet lists the 712 as operating at 0-50 C.

Quartz movements make sense because a mechanical watch won't run when completely submerged in oil. Ressence was able to overcome this obstacle by inventing a two-chamber case, the top half of which was filled with oil and the bottom where the movement was located was filled with air.

The innovation didn't stop there. When it was launched, the Ressence Type 3's claim to fame was that it was a crownless watch that was wound and set by turning the bottom (inflated) half of the case. The U-Boat Capsoil is not without a crown, but they did make it a disruptive piece by moving the slim crown to the left side of the case.

Another difference is that the Replica U-BOAT watch has an air bubble.

By performing DIY oil filling mods, we know it is possible to achieve results without air bubbles, but it requires extra time and precision. U-Boat say they intentionally left an air bubble under the crystal so that the oil could be seen floating around. Maybe production scalability was part of their decision to leave the bubble, or maybe it was because the bubble proved that there was indeed oil in it.

The air bubbles work well with the rimless curved crystal (another element that feels similar to Ressence), but it's a bit like Panerai's inverted Cyclops floating below the crystal. The original Capsoil part has a door on the case at 3:00 that says "LOosen to Fill". It remains to be seen whether the foam will get bigger or smaller over time, and how "filling" will affect it. What we do know is that your local watchmaker likely doesn't want to touch your watch when you get a new battery, so be prepared to hear that it has to be returned to U-Boat for repairs.

Either way, we love how U-Boat has incorporated foam into their marketing identities for their Capsoil and Darkmoon lines.

The oil-filled collection is available as a 44mm 2-hand model or as a 45mm chronograph. None of the models have a date.
