Ulysse Nardin Marine Observatory Torpilleur watch

Ulysse Nardin proves that when the old world meets the new, great things happen

For less than two centuries, Ulysse Nardin high quality replica watches has been manufacturing marine chronometers for ocean captains and commanders. However, in recent years, with watches such as the Freak and Executive Skeleton collections, they have quickly propelled themselves to the forefront of watchmaking – becoming the first company to use the innovative material silicon in their movements. The Marine Chronometer Torpilleur combines the best of both worlds, so without further ado…

one second story
The Marine Observatory Torpilleur watch shows the new, focused and enterprising face of Ulysse Nardin.

I will start this review not by talking about mechanical watches, but about naval battles. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, naval dominance rested on large floating fortresses with heavy plate armor and massive artillery. These ships, culminating in the Dreadnought-class battleships, are the undisputed masters of the seas. To combat these lumbering behemoths, the Torpilleur, or torpedo boat, was developed. Torpilleurs are streamlined, fast and modern, equipped with the latest technology - self-propelled torpedoes. These low-cost ships were intended to be battleship killers and pose a real threat to the dominance of larger ships. Now, do you really think that Ulysse Nardin’s choice to name its new streamlined marine chronometer replica watches for sale the “Torpilleur” is just a coincidence?

Of all the elements of the Torpilleur, the dial is the most traditional. It follows the established convention of a marine chronometer or deck watch – the early marine chronometer that made Ulysse Nardin famous. The blue hands contrast with the clear white lacquered dial, which is printed with bold Roman numerals and the dial text is perfectly balanced along the horizontal axis. The dial is also vertically balanced, with an oversized seconds subdial at six o'clock and a railway-style graduated ring around the edge. At the top of the dial is a slightly smaller, classically styled power reserve indicator. It's hard to go wrong with the black and white color scheme, with occasional red and blue highlights. Ulysse Nardin also offers a more modern blue dial variant, but if you prefer a timeless style, then white is your best choice. It is worth noting that this dial is simpler than the enamel dial on the tourbillon, which is also reflected in the more affordable price. Having said that, this is a very well-executed watch face that doesn't challenge your expectations in any serious way. This is what you want in a watch like this.

If the Ulysse Nardin high quality copy watches dial remains the same, the case represents a dramatic change and a return to traditionalism. If you’re familiar with UN’s Marine collection, you’ll know that its key differentiator is the slightly blocky case shape with integrated lugs and square crown guards. Everything on Torpilleur is gone. All that's left is the heavily notched bezel, and even that has been significantly reduced (as has the overall case height). The result is a 42mm case that sacrifices some of its unique features in favor of a more versatile, classic and timeless design. Personally, I'm happy with this trade-off, and I suspect many others will be too. While the steel version is the most popular, there is also a yellow gold version – which is my personal favorite, largely because of the contrast between the case and the blue hands.

The automatic UN-118 is all new, and it's an attractive workhorse with a number of noteworthy features. There’s a 60-hour power reserve, an internal silicon hairspring and a silicon escapement coated with synthetic diamond – the finish is attractive, but not exaggerated. I really like the stylized rotor, shaped like an anchor with three additional anchors inserted. My favorite detail on this rotor is the rough, hand-etched look that adds some textural interest. luxury copy Watches

All Torpilleur versions come with an alligator leather strap mounted on the deployment unit. A perfectly appropriate – if not exceptional – choice. The blue dial version is also available on a steel bracelet, but I haven’t seen one in person yet.

wear on wrist
If your personal style leans more formal, you'll be pleased with the Torpilleur. It's an incredibly traditional style, but given a sympathetic and nuanced modern makeover. With its slim bezel and large white dial, I found it to be quite large at 42mm, which made me really appreciate its thinner profile. If I wore a suit regularly, I would be happy to wear it every day. luxury copy Watches

judgment
Ulysse Nardin has been very outspoken about its desire to appeal to a wider audience, and the Torpilleur watch looks set to be an important flagship in achieving that mission. With its attractive style, cleverly designed case and movement, and competitive price, it certainly seems to fit its purpose.
